About the Summer of Resistance

What is the Summer of Resistance?

At a time when the Trump administration is working on all fronts to advance its hateful agenda, Greenpeace's Summer of Resistance is a chance to come together to learn the skills of creative communication, peaceful protest, and non-violent direct action necessary to step up our resistance, and to put those skills to work in our communities.

Together, through trainings and person-to-person movement building, the Summer of Resistance will spark hundreds of creative, non-violent resistance actions across the country to stand up for a more just, green, and peaceful world.

The Greenpeace Summer of Resistance has two goals:

  1. Train thousands of individuals in creative, non-violent resistance through an NVDA training tour, webcast parties, and a non-violent creative resistance resource guide
  2. Build the resistance by inspiring hundreds of creative, non-violent actions

Webcast parties and creative resistance actions can be big or small, heroic or ordinary, just as long as they give power to the people in the fight for justice and a healthy environment for all. This platform and the resources provided can help you take the next step for resistance and building power in our communities.

I'm considering hosting a Creative Action, can you help me?

Yes, Check out our resource guide , and if you still need or want support email us at resist.help.us@greenpeace.org

What can I build my creative resistance action around?

What have you noticed that needs fixing? Where do you see an opportunity for positive change, or a need to protect your community from harm?

Through the Summer of Resistance, we’re building power to fight back against Trump’s harmful agenda, and to build the just, green, and peaceful world that we want to see. There’s lots to work on, from fighting for clean water to stopping pipelines and beyond. Soon we will have a Resource Guide with some succesful examples.

When starting a creative resistance action, the most important step is to get the ball rolling. Don't worry about getting everything 100% right. Even experienced, professional campaigners make mistakes and often change tactics as things develop. You don't need to be an expert to launch action. You just need to be willing to learn new things along the way.

What can't I build a creative resistance action on?

The Resistance is a big movement. We reserve the right to use our judgment and remove action event from this site if it falls outside the Greenpeace principles of non-violence or if it explicitly advocates illegal activity. Please take responsibility for your action event.

Can you help me with graphics or visuals?

Yes! Here is a style guide, RESIST stencil, some printable materials, and a website where you can purchase RESIST gear!

I'm loving this and I want to learn and/or do more. Where do I go from here?

We're so glad you asked! The first thing you should do is join an in-person non-violent direct action training. Greenpeace is partnering with local trainers to lead day-long deep dives in ten cities, starting in Chicago the first weekend in July and continuing each weekend after in Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, DC, Miami, Charlotte, NYC, and other locations. We will also work to support communities on the front lines of pipeline and fossil fuel development. Head to www.summerofresistance.org and enter your zip code or use the map to find the training closest to you.

If you want to do even more to support the Summer of Resistance, join our volunteer team on Discord!

There are lots of campaigns that need a lot of support from a lot of people right now. Consider becoming a member of Greenpeace and check out our social network platform Greenwire.

Is Greenpeace working with other groups?

We are stronger together and every organization has its unique strengths. Greenpeace has 45+ years of non-violent direct action and creative resistance experience, which is why we are focusing on training people in these skills and inspiring individuals to brainstorm and host their own acts of creative resistance. The Resistance is a gigantic movement, and Greenpeace is in touch with many of the different organizations working to strengthen the resistance this summer.

Greenpeace is an an independent organization, funded by individuals, not corporations or governments. We do not endorse political parties and/or candidates. We are not connected or coordinated with the Democratic National Committee's (DNC) Resistance Summer.
